Songs from my mom’s car

from Overcrossings Project

On the evening of August 7, 2016, three artists and I installed temporary work and performed on and around the Yale Street pedestrian overcrossing (CalTrans bridge 53-105).

Andrew, Angel, Autumn, Heisue, Lauren, and I sang to the freeway. Together, we sang pop songs that my mother used to listen to in the car: Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, and Daniel Bedingfield. Between songs, we read text about my Chinese Japanese American family’s history of migration, incarceration, and resilience in L.A.
