I search for traces of time passing and the people who shaped the space: dust, wear, piles of paper and books, scratches on the concrete floors, and the mark of many hands. Construction lights reveal a different scale of time at work: botanical and geological, decay and growth. The space, with enough light and time, begins to speak for the unseen Japanese Americans who built it, who organized and sang and danced within its walls, and who continue to shape our future. The film closes with the echoes of a performance. The practice traveled to Japan through Buddhism and flowed into Shinto misogi water purification rituals. The Issei carried the practice to America in the late 1800s. Many were single men living in boarding houses, hotels, and SROs without baths. They would visit sentō public baths for a soak, a cleanse, a rest, and company. Ten were located in Little Tokyo, two of which were on the block where the performance took place: the Miyajima-yu and Tokiwa-yu. Only the Tokiwa-yu’s building still stands. Most sentō were lost to WWII Japanese American incarceration. As a part of the Sustainable Little Tokyo creative placekeeping initiative, I organized 12 artists to create site-specific community art programs in an unused storefront on First Street North—a block critical to the past, present, and future of Little Tokyo.Over the course of 2 months, 23 events, 1 exhibition, and 3 pop-up stores, we temporarily imagined affordable arts and cultural spaces that anchor Little Tokyo’s history and culture, and support our local artists, residents, and small business owners. The project will culminate in an artist publication. The I-110, celebrated as the world’s first freeway, has cut a wall through the communities of Chinatown, Cypress Park, Highland Park, and South Pasadena. In an attempt to provide safe access across these inhuman spaces, pedestrian overcrossings both accommodate and cage the body.Sixteen artists and two collectives engaged with each site and its surrounding communities through performance, temporary installations, and/or writing or print-specific projects for the publication. Andrew, Angel, Autumn, Heisue, Lauren, and I sang to the freeway. Together, we sang pop songs that my mother used to listen to in the car: Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, and Daniel Bedingfield.
